The male island's eleven contestants rejoiced at the finding of their first substantial meal, however Channel 4's decision to show the killing of the lizard didn't go down well on Twitter.

Fans watched in horror as one survivor, Barney, hacked away at the captured beast as he tried to detach its head from its body.

Despite having volunteered for the 'challenge', Barney looked visibly upset after finishing the deed, as he confessed: "A few of my friends have iguanas and I'm not sure how they'll view this."

The broadcaster had provided a warning before airing the episode, telling viewers: "This show contains the capture and slaughter of an animal."

Many fans were shocked to see the killing

However, that didn't stop fans storming the social media site.

"Could we have a moment of silence please for the iguana that was just beheaded for the purposes of light entertainment? #TheIsland" wrote one.

Another added: "Watching The Island, did we really need to see that wee iguana get its head chopped off ?? #TheIslandWithBearGrylls."

"And that's why I don't think I could do something like #TheIsland. I'm not sure I could kill something just because I'm on a TV show," one fan admitted.

Another said: "I've just seen an Iguana get beheaded for starving humans and I feel@quite sad about that #TheIsland."

However, not everyone felt so queasy about the scene.

One user wrote: "People moaning about the lizards head being chopped off, you knew it was coming? #TheIsland."

Tonight's episode – just the second in this year's series – saw an unprecedented three contestants walk from the show.

Paul, Joe and Andy all left the island after struggling to adjust to their tough new environments.

Speaking about the show, creator Bear Grylls recently said he was surprised by the number of people who wanted to take part.

We had a crazy number of people apply,” Bear revealed. "Something like 80,000, which is unheard of in TV. It’s because people want to feel it and say, ‘What would happen if it was me?’"

He added: "It was incredible to see the numbers, the tens of thousands of women who applied wanting to show the world that actually this is what modern women are made of."
