Gone are the satins and sequins, make-up and mad outfits. Adam Lambert simply doesn’t have the energy any more.

"Someone said to me, 'Oh you're not wearing all that crazy sh**, are you trying to tone it down?'” he explains.

“And I was like, 'No, I just got tired.’ F***! It was a lot of work!”

After taking his career to a whole new level as the frontman for Queen over the past few years – including a dazzling display on the BBC’s New Year’s Eve celebrations – it seems that Lambert has found a form of inner peace.

“The music industry is so crazy, competitive and focused,” he told Notion magazine.

“I kind of had to stop and ask myself, 'Why am I doing this? What do I want? Who am I? What am I about?' and just re-examine at everything.

“I finally became more grounded about all of the fame stuff; it's not freaking me out anymore.”

The outrageous singer was thrust into the public eye in 2009 when he finished as runner-up on the eighth season of American Idol and his debut album For Your Entertainment went to No.3 on the US charts.

He followed that with the No. 1 album Trespassing and hit the headlines as the first openly gay American male pop star.

But now the flamboyant star admits that it was a lot to deal with so quickly.

"There were certain ways in which I triumphed and certain ways in which I stumbled a little bit,” he admits.

“Unfortunately, people were watching while I was learning."

His upcoming third album The Original High marks a new direction and newfound maturity for the 33-year-old.

“I think one of the things I've been learning is the 'less is more' approach to a lot of things. Less is a little easier," he says.

“I've done the more bubblegum stuff, I've done the camp stuff, and now I want to encourage people to face their sh**.

“I want to show them the part of me that's not all polished… I want it to be real, you know?”

Adam Lambert’s new single Ghost Town premieres on April 21 and is released on June 7
