Forget Top Gear, this lot make Jeremy Clarkson and his buddies look like Sunday school teachers.

A mind-boggling array of souped-up cars, trucks and motorbikes roar across a spectacular desert amidst explosions and terrifying sand storms.

Brace yourselves, for the return of Mad Max.

Thirty years after Mel Gibson grumpily tried to save the world in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Tom Hardy kicks off a new chapter in the story.

Hardy's voice ominously opens the high-octane new trailer.

“In this wasteland I am the one who runs from both the living and the dead.

“A man reduced to a single instinct: survive!”

Scenes of a devastated, post-apocalyptic world follow as Max flees for his life from the terrifying and creepy minions of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne).

“As the world fell – each of us in our own way was broken,’ Max continues.

“It was hard to know who was more crazy – me or everyone else.”

Cheery stuff.

Jeremy Clarkson was trying out a new look.

What we know so far is that Max hooks up with Charlize Theron’s ball-busting Imperator Furiosa.

They flee across the desert facing bad guys and monumental sandstorms.

The high-speed action looks pretty impressive - even if it does seem a little like the Wacky Races with steroids and scary hair.

For some reason, supermodel and Transformers thespian Rosie Huntington-Whitely is also along for the ride.

Naturally, she looks ravishing in white flowing robes, proving that you do not need to abandon fashion (or dress sensibly) even after the whole world has gone to hell.

Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth in George Miller’s legendary franchise – and the first in thirty years since 1985’s Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome starring Mel Gibson.
