Ben Mendelsohn could take the lead in Star Wars: Rogue One

The Bloodline star has been scouted by Disney and Lucasfilm to play a lead role in the film, according to The Wrap.

Best-known for his critically acclaimed supporting roles in Killing Them Softly, Animal Kingdom and The Dark Knight Rises, 45-year-old Mendelsohn is certainly becoming more well-known in Hollywood, helped by his recent appearance in the biblical epic, Exodus: Gods And Kings.

Felicity Jones – who received an Oscar nomination for her part in The Theory Of Everything –  has already been confirmed to appear in the upcoming flick directed by Gareth Edwards, though her role has yet to be specified.

Gary Whitta – who penned the screenplay for After Earth – was replaced as the screenwriter for the picture by The Golden Compass's Chris Weitz earlier this year.

Rogue One - which is not due for release until the end of next year – will be set outside of the main Star Wars saga, while retaining some links to its universe, but not much is known of the plot.

Star Wars VII teaser trailer

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be the first new major film from the franchise in ten years, and is set to be part of a trilogy of new movies.

Recent leaked information also reveals that The Force Awakens will open with a scene featuring new character Rey, played by Brit newcomer Daisy Ridley.

Rey is thought to be the daughter of iconic original Star Wars characters Hans Solo and Princess Leia.

A scavenger on a backwater planet, viewers are introduced to her lonely life as she hunts for abandoned treasures on a massive crashed Star Destroyer.

Rey's storyline soon entwines with that of Finn, played by Attack The Block star John Boyega.

Finn is a wounded and abandoned Stormtrooper who begins to question his loyalty to The Empire.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in cinemas on December 18.
