The US brothers have made a deal with Marvel studios to take control of the Avenger's franchise from Joss Whedon – who directed the first Avengers film and the upcoming sequel Age Of Ultron.

The contractual agreement is expected to see both parts of Avengers: Infinity War to be shot back-to-back next year.

The pair's current undertaking – Captain America: Civil War – features Chris Evans reprising the title role and Robert Downey Jr returning as Tony Stark, who are both part of the Avengers ensemble.

The sequel is also expected to introduce the Black Panther into the Marvel cinematic universe, as well rumours that Spider-Man will make his debut.

Anthony and Joe have a lot on their plate as they are also set to be taking the reigns on the male-centric Ghostbusters film, with Channing Tatum due to take the lead.

However, it's not clear if the massive undertaking of Avengers: Infinity Wars will complicate this.

A change of directors for the franchise has been widely expected for months since Joss said he was reluctant to return for a third movie.

"I couldn't imagine doing this again," he said. "It's enormously hard, and it be, by then, a good five years since I created anything that was completely my own."

"So it's very doubtful that I would take on the two-part Infinity War movie that would eat up the next four years of my life."

Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 has been provisionally set for release in May 2018, with Part 2 opening a year later.
