The Divergent Series: Insurgent

COULD Shailene Woodley be a Meryl Streep in the making? The 23-year old actress has already received a Golden Globe nomination for The Descendants and impressed in blockbuster weepie The Fault In Their Stars for which she was Oscar-tipped last year.

Director: Robert Schwentke

Stars: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Kate Winslet

She can carry a franchise too as evidenced by The Divergent Series: Insurgent, the second of four in the Hunger Games-style series based on the best-selling novels by Veronica Ruth.

There’s a subtlety and effortless quality to her work, along with her appealing but not overly pretty looks, which put me in mind of Streep as her character, Tris, battles guilt and self-doubt in this confident sequel which blends interesting character dynamics with splashy action and special effects, if not a great deal of story.

Set in a dystopian future, humanity is reduced to a decaying walled city divided into “factions” along personality type in order preserve peace.

Tris is a “divergent” whose multiple gifts can’t be categorised which pits her against Kate Winslet’s power-hungry, Jeanne, a conflict now increasingly personal.
