Unfortunately, the elements that are fresh and intriguing are the very ones that receive the least attention.

Charismatic newcomer Frederick Schmidt is impressive as Dave, a small-time East End crook being welcomed into the family business by his dodgy Uncle Jimmy (Martin Askew). When a drugs deal goes badly wrong, Dave is forced to question his whole existence and finds some peace and comfort when he steps into the local mosque.

There are promising elements here, including Aymen Hamduchi as Dave’s mate Tariq and Frederick Schmidt who has some of the intensity and presence that has helped to elevate Jack O’Connell to the front ranks of British stars over the past year.

Still, the film seems happy to settle for rum characters and violent acts when it promised much more.
