In Shaun The Sheep: The Movie, Shaun and his sheep mates just want a break from the drudgery of their daily routine down on the farm.

But the plan for a day of cocktails, ice cream and DVD watching goes horribly wrong leaving The Farmer in hospital with memory loss.

Shaun and the gang are hardly any better off, far from the comfort of Mossy Bottom Farm and facing the dangers of The Big City.

The big screen version of the television show is adorable family fun as it mixes up silly shenanigans, cute, expressive creatures, an acappella showstopper and the kind of inventive, slapstick comedy that wouldn’t seem out of place in a Laurel and Hardy romp.

The stop-motion techniques used by Aardman animation remain as appealing as ever, giving life to Heath Robinson-style contraptions, clever visual gags and characters.

Not surprisingly it does struggle to sustain itself over a full-length feature before the Wizard Of Oz-style realisation that there really is nowhere like home.

Great fun.
