Ed Miliband must prove he is not in SNP’s pocket

LAST week, Sir John Major’s surprise intervention on the threat of an SNP/Labour pact after the General Election made waves.

It was a wake-up call to the Tories and to Britain as a whole.

If Ed Miliband wasn’t prepared to say that no deal would be done then the future of the United Kingdom hung in the balance, dependent on a cynical Labour bid to scramble in to Downing Street.

Now David Cameron has also called on Ed Miliband to rule out a stitch up with the Scottish Nationalist Party “if he cares about this country”. Meanwhile a new campaign poster from the Conservatives showing Alex Salmond with Ed Miliband comfortably nestling in his pocket makes the point very eloquently.

For it is increasingly apparent that Miliband’s reluctance to disavow any possible coalition with the SNP will play very badly with English voters. It is an ideal stick with which the Conservatives can beat Labour.

There is also deep concern among business leaders. Lord Bilimoria, chairman and founder of Cobra Beer has said that the possibility of a marriage between high-taxing Labour and the high-spending Scottish nationalists is “terrifying”.

This is a deadly serious issue not merely a political football. If Ed Miliband won’t come clean then he has proved beyond any doubt that if he is prepared to oversee the destruction of the United Kingdom then he is certainly not fit to be its Prime Minister.

The Home Office’s new bid to crack down on all forms of extremism and thus prevent the radicalisation of young British Muslims is to be welcomed.

For too long universities and schools have allowed extremism to thrive and those who hate this country’s value have been allowed to live on its generous welfare benefits.

Now welfare recipients must make efforts to speak English, sharia law will be under an “independent review” (though that’s sounds rather woolly – why not ban it altogether?), while jobcentre staff will be trained to spot extremists who attend interviews.

Let’s also hope that human rights campaigners and charities that become apologists for barbaric extremism will at last examine their own consciences.

A baby owl has been found in Dartmoor prison having apparently broken in to the grim penitentiary.

Since then he has been nursed back to health in an owl sanctuary and is now – like his former fellow inmates – waiting to be released.

At least we know he’s unlikely to have picked up any bad habits while he was inside.
