Cutting red tape is latest promise broken by the EU

YET again the EU has demonstrated its complete contempt for democracy by promising to do one thing and then doing the opposite.

After saying it would cut back red tape it has instead produced 1,139 new business regulations and directives since October last year.

It is difficult to imagine any national government getting away with riding roughshod over its promises in such a brazen manner.

But the undemocratic EU is not answerable to the electorate in the same way that a national government is – allowing it to follow its own agenda irrespective of the wishes of the people it governs.

The Eurocrats in Brussels only truly care about ensuring that we continue along the path of “ever closer union”, eventually culminating in the formation of a European superstate.

Furthermore in this instance reneging on the promise and producing such a vast quantity of legislation is a huge mistake.

These regulations will hold businesses back by forcing them to use up valuable resources on ensuring they comply with the mountain of diktats dreamt up in Brussels.

It is business growth that creates jobs, improves wages and provides tax revenue. With economies on the continent stalling the EU’s decision to heap pressure on businesses is deeply misguided.

Elderly need better care

A COALITION of 76 charities has warned that more than 300,000 pensioners face missing out on the support they need because the threshold to qualify for care is too high.

The Government must listen to these concerns and ensure that the elderly are not missing out on care.

As a civilised society we have an obligation to look after those who cannot look after themselves.

Leaving people without the help they need to even get dressed is inhumane.

The charities have warned that those denied care will be likely to need hospital treatment instead.

This is disruptive and distressing for those who will be subjected to it when they could have been cared for in a much more comfortable setting.

Our pride in armed forces

EVERY year the public displays its typical generosity by embracing the poppy appeal.

It is a heartwarming nationwide commemoration of the sacrifices made by our armed forces to defend our country and our way of life.

And of course the money raised is put to good use by the Royal British Legion.

We look forward to seeing people across the country wearing their poppies with pride.
