We must be freed from the grim shackles of the EU
WHEN a wild animal is scared it attacks. Much the same is true of human beings, which is why Herman Van Rompuy’s blast at Britain for wanting to “cherry pick” the benefits of EU membership is so telling.
The EU Council President has realised that Britain will be trifled with no longer: the Prime Minister is due to make a speech calling for renegotiation of our EU membership followed, at long last, by a referendum.
Mr Van Rompuy and his ilk are clearly scared that the vast bureaucratic monolith they have spent so long establishing is finally splitting apart at the seams.
As if that were not enough Mr Van Rompuy, along with the German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble, have also resorted to threats warning Britain that outside the EU we would
lose our influence in the world.
We must be free to make our way in the world once more
In fact, the very opposite would happen. Britain is and always has been the gateway between Europe and the United States and it is inconceivable that position would change.
In addition, we would also be free to build up our own trading alliances with the Commonwealth countries and the developing Asian nations.
Mr Cameron must not let us down at this late stage. Threats are the mark of the bully and the coward.
We must be free to make our way in the world once more.
