Energy suppliers are placing urgent focus on supporting customers, says PHILIPPE COMMARET

The government and energy suppliers are quite rightly placing urgent focus on supporting customers through the cost of living crisis. It's important we also use the current challenges as motivation to put in place measures that will help Britain avoid similar crises in future and make lower carbon living a reality for everyone.

Autumn Statement: Jeremy Hunt outlines further energy support

The biggest opportunity to cut household bills is a dramatic increase in energy efficiency. The government and energy suppliers like EDF have a vital role to play in encouraging efficiency, but there is real power in the hands of customers to grasp this opportunity today.

Checking your loft insulation is a good place to start. Improving loft insulation can have a significant impact on energy bills, potentially saving people over £300 per year.

The good news is it’s simple to check if your insulation is up to scratch, so why not take a quick look when you fetch down the Christmas decorations this December?

We recently undertook a survey that revealed over 70 percent of people in the UK do not know which electrical appliances use the most energy in their homes.

That confusion means they could be missing out on small changes that could make a big difference to their energy bills.

For example, our survey found people use their microwaves on average for 11 minutes a day, costing them £1.50 over a month.

They typically use their oven, which is 30 times more expensive to run, for over two hours a day at a cost of over £47 a month.

Just over 20 percent of people are opting to use their washing machine on a 30 degree cycle, despite the 40 percent electricity saving this offers over a year when compared to washing at higher temperatures.

Managing your household energy usage is more important than ever, but it can be hard to make savings without first understanding where your biggest spend is.

The good news is installing a smart meter, and using an app such as EDF’s Energy Hub, can help you understand the changes you can make to daily routines that will help start reducing your bills straight away.
