The 58-year-old, who came under fire at the BAFTA Awards this weekend for branding Jenny Beavan a "bag lady", is reportedly leaving his social media woes behind and moving to the City of Angels.
His other half told The Sun: "We're moving to Los Angeles and I'm applying for a green card. We're excited about having a new base."
The QI host's swift exit comes just after the star defensively walked away from his Twitter account, after an onslaught of abuse for his cheeky remark about close friend Jenny.
At the film industry awards, Stephen made her the butt of one of his jokes: "Only one of the great cinematic costume designers would come to an awards ceremony dressed as a bag lady."

The star was attacked on Twitter for a joke he made during his BAFTA hosting duties
But the response online was less than favourable.
Stephen's final post read: "Will all you sanctimonious f***ers f*** the f*** off Jenny Beaven is a friend and joshing is legitimate. Christ I want to leave the planet."
After deleting his account, the comedian took to his official website to explain his departure from social media site stating it was "no big deal".
The message read: "It's no big deal – as it shouldn't be. But yes, for anyone interested I have indeed deactivated my twitter account.

"I've ‘left' twitter before, of course: many people have time off from it whether they are in the public eye or not. Think of it as not much more than leaving a room."
He then quoted Martin Luther King: “I am free, free at last.”
The television personality insisted he hadn't left Twitter in some sort of "a huff".
