Maverick actor and Hollywood star James Garner dies aged 86
HOLLYWOOD legend James Garner has died aged 86.
The Rockford Files star was announced dead on Saturday night after an ambulance was dispatched to his Los Angeles home, according to TMZ.
While the cause of his death is unknown as of yet, the Oscar nominated actor - who starred in hit film The Notebook alongside Ryan Gosling - had experienced a wealth of health scares during his life.
It was reported that he underwent quintuple bypass heart surgery in 1988 before suffering from a minor stroke in 2008.
The three-time Golden Globe winner was most famous for playing gun-slinger Bret Maverick in the 1957 western TV series.
He also starred in 70s detective drama The Rockford Files, while taking on roles in Hollywood films such as The Great Escape and Space Cowboys.
More recently, the actor played the older version of Ryan Gosling's character, Duke, in hit film The Notebook.
James - who was born in Oklahoma as the youngest of three - is survived by his longtime wife Lois - whom he wed in 1956 - and their 56-year-old daughter Greta 'Gigi' Garner.
