Why so shy? Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts hide behind sunglasses at Critics Choice Awards
THEY'VE been in the movie business for years, but Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts went a little camera shy last night, and hid behind their sunglasses on the red carpet.
The actresses, who play mother and daughter in the critically acclaimed August: Osage County, arrived together for a girls night out at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards, but opted to accessorise their high-fashion looks with a pair of dark shades.
Making their rounds on the red carpet, the pair didn't leave each others sides as they held hands and giggled throughout their appearance.
Julia looked stunning in a monochrome patterned dress, which swept across the flow, while Meryl looked chic in a navy shift dress, which she wore with a pair of black tights.
Both teamed their outfits with simple black clutch bags, but it was Julia who really stole the show with her curve-hugging ensemble and tousled hair.
However, Meryl couldn't have looked happier as she sashayed down the red carpet with her friend, and it's easy to see why after the star earned a record 18th nomination at the Oscars on Thursday.
The 64-year-old is nominated for Best Actress for her role as the pill-popping matriarch in the film's adaptation of Tracy Lett's prize-winning play.
This is her 15th Best Actress nomination, which runs alongside her three nods for supporting roles, making her the most nominated movie star in Academy history.
The actress will fight it out Sandra Bullock for her role in Gravity, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Judi Dench for Philomena and Amy Adams for American Hustle.
Julia Roberts, another former Best Actress winner, is also up for nomination at the awards ceremony for her supporting role in August: Osage County.
The 86th annual Academy Awards are due to take place on March 2.
Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave and David O. Russell's American Hustle led the Critics Choice Movie Award nominations with 13 bids each, with both films being nominated for best picture, actor, supporting actor and actress, acting ensemble, director, editing, costume design and make up.
Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock, came a close second with 10 nominations, including best picture, actress, director and visual effects.
Those up for lead actor and actress included Robert Redford for All is Lost, Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, and Meryl Streep for August: Osage County.
