Former Emmerdale star Gemma Atkinson has opened up about her “struggles” keeping fit while her fiancé Gorka Marquez is away. The Strictly Come Dancing professional has left all childcare duties to Gemma while he spends the next month touring the country with his BBC co-stars.
Spanish dancer Gorka is taking part in the Strictly Come Dancing The Professionals UK Tour, which means he has been forced to take some time away from his young family. Gemma, 39, and Gorka, 33, share two children: four-year-old daughter Mia and newborn son Thiago.
Fitness enthusiast Gemma, who regularly shares her workout sessions on social media, has admitted that Gorka’s absence has made her gym routine all the more challenging. Taking to Instagram, the Hits Radio presenter shared her exhaustion with her 1.9 million followers.
In a clip posted to her story, a sweaty-looking Gemma panted as she spoke to her fans in her gymwear. “Done,” she announced. “That was really hard this morning.
“I struggled a lot,” she continued. “It’s not like every day you’re like ‘Yeah!’ My hip flex is sore which isn’t good, I’ll have to do a good stretch. But I’ve done it - just 25 minutes.
“Five rounds, five exercises… Done. 45 seconds of doing the exercise, 15 seconds rest… So I’m glad I’ve done it, but it was bloody hard today!” she admitted.
She captioned the video: “Today was tough. I’m tired.
“Gorka has been away 2wks now & there’s 2 more wks to go before he’s home so these 5am sessions are the only guaranteed time I can train.
“One day last week I tried to do it when Tio took his nap around 11am but he woke up after 15 mins.

“5am to 7am is the only time I know I have more than 40 mins so it has to be done then,” she concluded. (sic)
In another clip, a smiling Gemma showed her baby Thiago playing with his bottle as spoke about the “difficult time” the family had previously endured while making renovations to their home.
However, she reassured fans that despite their previous “nightmare”, their new builders had been “amazing” in working with them on their extension.
Gemma and Gorka first met in 2017, welcomed their first child in July, 2019 and became engaged on Valentine’s Day, 2021.
