Shelley Duvall, the horror icon known for her roles in The Shining and Frankenweenie, has broken her silence after a 22-year hiatus from Hollywood.

In a rare interview with The New York Times, Duvall revealed the pain she experienced in the industry.

She said: "I was a star, I had leading roles. People think it's just ageing, but it's not. It's violence."

Duvall suggested that people would seem friendly but then "turn on her on a dime", adding: "You would never believe it unless it happens to you. That's why you get hurt, because you can't really believe it's true."

The actress, who suffers from diabetes and a swollen foot, often sleeps in her car where she keeps photos from her acting days in the glove box.

Her partner of 30 years, Dan Gilroy, expressed his concern about her sleeping in the car.

He explained that Duvall's home was destroyed in the 1994 earthquake, prompting her move to Texas for a fresh start.

However, according to Gilroy, she "started becoming afraid of things".

Dan revealed that Shelley started to "think she was being attacked" and even reached out to the FBI for assistance, marking a downturn in her condition.

Despite her challenges, Duvall is poised for a comeback with The Forest Hills, set to premiere later this year.

She will share the screen with Edward Furlong, Chiko Mendez and Dee Wallace in the chilling film about a man plagued by visions following a head injury during a camping trip.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating the release since last year, as evidenced by a Reddit thread querying the film's launch date.

A user claiming to be the director - though this remains unverified - responded: "[...] Since it is an independent film, we are in the process of distribution.

"It takes time from offers to deals and then the release," adding that the film is likely to hit screens in 2024.
