Martin Roberts admitted it's "heartbreaking at times" being away from his loved ones while undertaking a major project.

The TV presenter is married to wife Kirsty Roberts and they share two children together - with the family residing in a small village near Bath.

Now, the Homes Under The Hammer presenter has become the proud owner of the Hendrewen Inn and Hotel in the village of Blaencwm, at the top of the Rhondda Valley, an hour's drive from Cardiff, Wales and it is the only pub in the local community.

The 60-year-old admitted while his renovation has at times kept him away from his family, they are very supportive of his latest endeavour.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Martin explained: "The family are really supportive, but the kids are at school so we have to keep the family boat sailing.

"As anyone with a [young] family will know it's taking them to dinner or to do after-school stuff and then getting them to school on time, then being with their friends that they've got at school.

"I think there's a period when that has to take priority and it doesn't."

He continued: "Luckily, my wife does it. She keeps on top of all of that so it does enable me to go off and carry on with my madcap project, which actually isn't madcap. I'm doing it for all the right reasons. And I'm enjoying it.

"As tiring and heartbreaking at times as it is, you know, it's something I'm really, really enjoying and proud of, which is why we are filming it."

Fans will not have to wait too long to see the outcome of his renovation as Martin recently announced a YouTube series which showcases the project from start to finish.

In the trailer, his wife Kirsty mused: "Just head is spinning right now in terms of how we turn this around."

The TV star has even enlisted the help of young people in the local area to assist in the renovation allowing them an opportunity to pick up some vocational skills.

As well as TV presenting, Martin and his wife have a large portfolio of properties and are not new to property makeovers. While the latest revamp has forced him to stick to a tight budget he is hopeful he will be able to rejuvenate the local community.

Homes Under The Hammer airs weekdays on BBC One at 11.30am
