Richard E Grant was overcome with emotion after unpacking his late wife Joan's belongings in London, following the sell of the holiday home they owned in the South of France for over 30 years.

Richard E Grant struggled to fight back tears as he discussed unpacking items belongings to his late wife Joan at his London home last night.

The actor lost his spouse of over 30 years from lung cancer back in 2021 and last month, sold their holiday home in the South of France.

At the time of selling, Richard, 66, said leaving their much-loved property behind had been a "brutal process".

Now after receiving sentimental family belongings back in London, he told fans it felt "extraordinarily nostalgic and powerful".

Overcome with emotion, he added: "And, somehow even though its two years since Joan died, unpacking stuff and finding a place for it in London, is like bringing her home."

Richard shared the clip in view of his 521,000 followers with the caption: "Unpacking a lifetime together."

He was swiftly inundated with supportive messages, as one wrote: "Joan would be so deeply proud of you Richard. You are the most perfect curator and narrator of a remarkable life."

A second commented: "You are showing us how to do grief… thank you."

A third added: "Sending a big hug you dear man nostalgia can be almost unbearable. It's not just 'stuff', it's memories of a treasured past with your beloved Joan."

"You are mourning with such dignity. Keep the conversation going, I feel you. Much love Richard," another wrote.

The Withnail and I actor discussed the process of putting their holiday home up for sale back in July.

At the time, he posted: "Heart sore to sell Le Pigeonnier in Provence after 30 Summers. Sleeps 7. Pool, badminton, olive and fruit trees."

As he sorted through her belongings, he told fans it felt like a "second bereavement".

He explained: "You have to go through everything all over again.

"My sympathies to anyone who’s going through this or having to go through this brutal process.

"It always makes me wonder at the end of it do, 'Anyway, onwards and upwards'."

Richard and Joan married in 1986, three years into their relationship after meeting at an acting school.

Together, they have a 34-year-old daughter named Olivia.

Joan also has a son named Tom from a previous marriage, whom Richard met when he was seven.
